Fans of Frusciante's fast and aggressive style that is characteristic of his playing with the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be surprised as none of the tracks are funky or in your face. However, this album really showcases John's vocals as a soloist (the tracked backgrounds are incredible) and his ability to write. I like to think that he just sat down one day with his guitar and recorded wh at was on his mind and made it into an album (hence the raw feeling I hear). If you are not looking to buy the album immeadiately, good sample tracks to get would be 'Anne', 'The Real', 'The Past Recedes' and 'Ascenscion'. I never liked his solo stuff at first, and you may not either on first listen.
