I am at work right now so I can't try or verify this on my D7000. Why Nikon chose to discontinue support of the D2X mode picture controls in the D300s?

My assumption was that they tried to move away from Optional Picture Controls and replace them with Custom Picture Controls instead, but I might be wrong. This is a compilation of my findings after some research on Internet: The D2X modes (M1, M2, M3), Portrait (PT) and Landscape (LS) are considered Optional Picture Controls (with a 'NOP' file extension) and not Custom Picture Controls (with a 'NCP' file extension).

The biggest difference between the built-in and Optional Picture Controls is that the built-in ones come off the camera's firmware and cannot be deleted. Optional Picture Controls are treated like built-in but do not come pre-shipped with the firmware. They can be downloaded and installed. Note that since Optional Picture Controls can be deleted, if you have created a Custom Picture Control based on an Optional Picture Control and have deleted the Optional Picture Control that was the base, your Custom Picture Control will no longer be usable. It will show up as greyed out in the Picture Control Settings menu. Custom Picture Controls are not 'atomically complete' whereas the built-in Picture Controls and Optional Picture Controls are and thus considered Base Picture Controls. Custom Picture Controls must be built and derived from Base Picture Controls.

Thus Custom Picture Controls are dependent upon having a Base Picture Control referenced and installed first. A camera capable of loading 'NOP' files expect these files to be located in a subdirectory named ' NIKON' in the root directory of the memory card. Whereas 'NCP' files are expected to go into a subdirectory named ' NIKON/CUSTOMPC'. I don't think the D300s or D7000 will load a 'NOP' file like 'D3X_ M1.NOP' even if you put them in a folder named ' NIKON'.

But it seems like someone managed to load Optional Picture Controls files into his D300s by renaming the files to 'PICCON02.NCP'! Setup exe pes 2011 pc. It might therefore be worth a try to download the D2X 'NOP' files and rename them to something like 'PICCON01.NCP' to 'PICCON09.NCP', then put them in a subfolder named ' NIKON/CUSTOMPC' on a SD card, and then try to load them into a D7000. It might work but I haven't had a chance to test it my self.

Home after work an I have tried but found no way to load a 'NOP' file into the D7000. It is not recognized by the camera even if renamed.

I don't think it would be useful anyway if Nikon is really just referring to what it's based on by name. If D300s, D90 and now D7000 is not capable of loading DX2M1-M3 as something to base a picture control at then it's broke anyway. Only other option would be to make a new custom picture control based on any of the built-ins with the same curve as the DX2M1-M3 as a custom curve.

Only problem is how to find out what the DX2M1-M3 curves looks like. Seems like there has been some attempts already to replicate these modes for D90 & Co. You could also follow Nikons recommendations on this page: For the D7000 I guess it would equal something like: Model: Picture Control, Sharpening, Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, Hue D2X ModeⅠ: Standard, 1, 0, -1, -1, 0 D2X ModeⅡ: Neutral, 1, 2, -1, 0, 0 D2X ModeⅢ: Vivid, 1, 0, -1, -1, 0.

It really is a faint approximation, as is what I tried to do. Without knowing wha that tone curve looks like, it's nearly impossible to fully match the D2X modes. The fact that this is crippled on the D7000 is a major downer for me. Though I shoot RAW and can just as easily apply the D2X mode controls in ViewNX, it is an extra step I'd rather eliminate for my people shots, for instance, where I like to use D2XMODE1, and the Portrait mode doesn't really satisfy. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Seeking the heart and spirit in each image Gallery and blog: Flickr stream.
