I have an EDB 605 that I've done some mods to. Even with the preamp, the output was a little on the low side but the sound isn't bad - certainly good enough for live performance. You might try simply adding a clean boost circuit to get more output - this will require putting a battery in your bass. I can suggest some circuits if you want to DIY. I swapped the preamp from my 605 out for one from a different bass - you can have the original one if you cover the cost of postage if you want it but I suspect the pickups one the edc 700 are different from the edb 600 to have that work well. Also, the pre for the 605 has the pots soldered to the board so unless the hole layout is identical between the two basses, the shafts won't line up.

I also have some extra boost circuits around that I don't need - same deal - cover cost of postage and you can have them for free. You should start with the original wiring diagram to see what you need to do to restore the bass.

The preamp is part number 3EQ1VM310, the website says it's for passive pickups so these are likely not active pickups. It might take a month or two to come over from Japan. I appreciate the offer youre making, but my plan is to build the Vari-mid III (the preamp that my bass uses) from scratch, and even further, enhancing it with mods, i build pedals, so i know whats the path to go. The thing thats really difficult is to get the same potentiometers that it has, i found ONE company that builds them, so ill get them from these guys so my pickups are behaving normally?.their direct passive sound is very low output, no bass at all, lots of treble and hi mids.

I guess theyre meant to be that way, with the pre making all the 'big sound'. Ibanez will probably sell you the pots - at least the part numbers can be found on the website. I saw a version of the Vari-Mid on sale from Ibanez for $112, including pots if you want to start there. I don't know anything about the specific pickups on the EDC 700 but what you're saying doesn't sound right for a decent set of electric bass pickups. Ibanez says they're 'full sound pickups' or words to that effect in the name but that would lead me to believe there's nothing rolling off the mids or the highs. Even so, there should still be a decent bass output.

I did dig into the design of the original pre on my 605 and discovered the output stage was designed to roll off above 3500. I didn't care for it so the new/old preamp sounded much better - really brought back the upper end of the output.
